The test ride of the longest train journey began in China and ended in Madrid, Spain at the end of December. Beijing is hoping to extend their availability to the continent with a new project because China wants to strengthen its freight transportation options. This has to do with the demand for European goods in China. Train routes already exist between China and Germany, but now they want to expand to Spain.

Roughly 80 percent of global trade is shipped by boat as freight train service faces several technical and bureaucratic hurdles. For example the goods from China to Madrid have to be transferred into different wagons during the journey. But transport by train is cheaper, more environmental friendly and faster than shipping by boat. And that’s why they are testing this long train journey for transferring goods across continents.
