From First Mile to Last Mile – Global Industrial & Logistics Trends

Hello everyone!

I found a very interesting report about the 2015 global logistics called “From First Mile To Last Mile: Global Industrial And Logistics Trends”, by Colliers International. The key in this research is to point out the main factors that will affect logistics and warehousing for the next years, trying to estimate how the actual situation will change, providing some real examples, and giving some advice for the future.

The report remarks the existence of an increasing trend of e-commerce, due to a change of consumers’ behavior: new generations will be more used to buy through the Internet than we are. In fact, not only using computers but smart phones will be in our daily lives.

It is also important the creation of new concentrated markets. China and Asia are continuously evolving and more urbanized areas have appeared recently. Thus, this new consumers will have a great impact on the e-commerce.

The report also includes a research of the most used routes by firms to ship their products, and the ports that have experienced the greatest change in activity. It is also discussed the called “AsiaPac” trend in the future, specially the China and India cases.

In order to respond to these imminent changes in population and behavior, the “first mile” and “last mile” topics are reviewed. The report examines some different logistic solutions to these issues.

Finally, the report provides some examples to illustrate all these findings. They go through the well known Amazon case, two online groceries — one in United States and the other one in UK — and LPP — a huge fashion retail group in Europe —.

Even if this report is quite long, I think it would be very interesting to take a look at it; lots of graphics to depict the situation are provided, so it is really nice to read. Here you have the link:

E-commerce in Spain (Excel)

This is not a post about and article but an excel about the e-commerce in Spain.

We all know that e-commerce is growing but I wanted to compute how much has grown in the past 10 years. I took three variables that can explain the evolution of e-commerce: % of firms that have internet connection, % of sales through e-commerce compared to the total volume of sales and % of firms that has selled a product via web or via app.

As you can see, the three variables have grown significantly from 2004 to 2014. We can also see how the financial crises affected e-commerce: On the one hand, the % of firms that have internet connection and the % of sales through e-commerce did not decrease because of the crises. But, on the other hand, the % of firms that selled products via web or app decreased. This might be because there was a rising number of start-ups that based their business model on e-commerce and they could not face the decrease in demand caused by the financial crises.

Failed logistics?

So for the last post I wanted to show a real picture taken by me illustrating what Elena said in class about the containers being piled up and then being almost impossible to move them. This place was near the airport and there where about 6 containers piled up. Also they where all together so there was no space for any transport to get there and move them. I think they don’t plan the storing of this and just put them where they can.

Christmas is coming and UPS is getting prepared

Christmas is coming and UPS is getting prepared.

It has been estimated that Spanish customers will spend nearly 1.200 millions of Euros these days, a 11% more than last year.

Since Black Friday until Christmas, UPS has calculated that they will probably deliver 630 million products around the world. Their daily activity is 18 million packages but these days will be the double. UPS will employ 100.000 temporally workers to succeed with their daily activity on these dates.

This huge amount of daily deliveries is because customers trust on the flexibility and accuracy of this company. UPS stands out of the quality of their services as well because the constant flexibility to adapt to the preferences of the customers because they can change the date and place of the shipments.

Buying online is nowadays more common so UPS has to continue applying innovation in logistics to not lose the confidence of their customers about the quality, flexibility and commodity that UPS offers.

They are prepared for our deliver: let’s buy and trust them!

IMPERIAL optimises transport services with new lightweight trailers

I’ve found an interesting article about the optimization of the transport services with lightweight trailers that is very useful to transport heavy components and products.

The Berger semi-trailer, which is optimised to carry a maximum payload, weighs less than 4.7 tonnes so it’s an awesome innovation for the transportation and logistics to optimize the lead times and accessibility!

Cookies and flights

Hi guys! Today I would like to share an experience that can be useful for you if you want to go on holidays and book your flights online.

Last week, Joan Ramon Gonzalez came to our class and did a presentation about Big Data. He talked about cookies, as Wikipedia describes it: “a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in the user’s web browser. Every time the user loads the website, the browser sends the cookie back to the server to notify the user’s previous activity”.
I am currently working on a touristic firm that organizes students’ travels. A few days ago we realize that when we were looking for flights from Barcelona to London, they were about 200 euros for the days we were demanding. It can happens that you can find some flights with a high price but it’s really weird that they are that expensive for ALL the flights in the same day (even for the day before and after). So what my colleague and I did was to open a new “private window” in Firefox: the one that doesn’t keep the websites you visited before and during the private window was opened. What we discover was that the same flights we were searching for in a normal window were about 60 euros, less than a half of the normal website price! We were impressed for that price change.

So, what happened here? The company website keeps the search you did a couple times before so when you come back and search for the same flight they can increase its price. That’s what cookies do.
We have to be really careful with cookies. Before Joan Ramon came to explain those kind of things to us, I was not pretty sure about what the word “cookies” implied. Now I know, firms can be very intrusive nowadays thanks to the internet and it is something that makes me feel mad.

I wanted to share with you this personal experience because when I realize I couldn’t believe it was real. But it is and I hope to have helped you enough to make you realize about how our privacy is not being respected at all

Top 10 Logistics and Supply chain facts

Today I am sharing a info-graphic post of Cerasis Blog concerning the 10 most important trends in supply chain logistics of last year.
Cerasis is a shipment logistics consultant from USA and this info-graphic compilation comes from a Canadian logistics enterprise’s blog, Morai Logistics. They rank the top 10 logistics trends from 2014 as follows:

3_Supplier Diversity and Women;
5_RFID (Radio Frequency Identification/ “internet of things”);
6_World Bank Institute’s Private Sector Platform;

So, as you can see, very alike what we have been discussing in class.
The info-graphic portraits some straight forward statistics about those topics, in a very elucidating way.
For me, the most interesting topic was the World Bank Institute’s Private Sector Platform, which is a database of over 60 million enterprises around the world concerning all data they have to share about their operations, giving in return the most complete statistics, graphics, data sources, etc., from this subject for the private sector. (

The Cerasis Blog has also a lot of other posts about logistics, collected from several blogs around the world, so it is a great source of information on this subject and can help us a lot with our blog. (
